My mind goes back a long way _ March 1989 to be precise. It was his debut season in first-class cricket. Having started with a century in his first match (against Gujarat), Sachin Tendulkar was obviously the centre of attraction when Delhi played Bombay in the Ranji Trophy semifinal. I was leading the side, we won, but it was this 16-year-old who mesmerised all of us with his awesome talent. He top scored for his team with a brilliant 78 and to me personally, a star was born that day. Tendulkar was special and I am happy I had not erred in judging him.
When I saw him take the oath as a Member of Parliament, my mind was flooded with some very fond memories of having spent time with him. That he is a phenomenon we all know. It is this new role in Rajya Sabha that fascinates me.
I am sure he must have thought and consulted his advisers before accepting the offer. He is a nominated member and fully understands his responsibilities. He knows he can contribute and it was evident from his media interaction after the oath. He made his approach known by saying that cricket was his priority.
I know he will strive for other sports too. He is a sportsman and I have known him well enough to understand how he will handle the new responsibility. He is right when he seeks the support of media and Parliamentarians. He will play cricket and once he retires he will contribute to Indian sport.Read more
